'Modern Family' Season 5, DOMA & Prop 8: Cameron & Mitchel Wedding After Supreme Court Decision on Gay Marriage? Producers Considering it!
According to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the fifth season of ABC's hit family comedy Modern Family could possibly feature a wedding between the show's gay couple Cameron Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). The series' co-creator, Christopher Lloyd told EW, "It's a real possibility." Last season the ACLU were pushing for the show to write in a gay wedding for the two characters, saying that it would be "important" "politically," but it did not happen. But with this week's Supreme Court ruling on DOMA and Prop 8, the marriage of Cameron and Mitchell is definitely on the minds of the show's cast and crew.
"To the extent that people are interested in what happens on the show and how they really take these characters to heart, it's a compliment," Lloyd said. "But if they want to campaign to influence how we deal with the characters, that starts to be intrusive. We resist that. The ACLU had their heart in right place, but there was a silliness to the whole thing. They don't exist, you know! They really are fiction."
When talking about the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage and how it affects his TV show, Lloyd exclaimed, "It's a funny thing, sitting around and celebrating for your characters on a day like this. We were happy for Mitch and Cam today!"
"It's certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn't have in prior seasons," Lloyd said of a wedding between the show's gay couple.
"We've had a number of conversations," he continued. "As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell's life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn't it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it? We imagine a lot of gay couples today are deciding whether to get married now that it's open to them. From our standpoint, that's something to explore."
