Lauryn Hill, Prison 2013 [VIDEO]: 'Neurotic Society' Songstress Starts 3-Month Sentence for Tax Evasion in 'Minimum Security' Jail
Today, TMZ reported that R&B singer Lauryn Hill has checked in to a "minimum security type" federal corrections facility in Danbury, Connecticut. This is the first day of her 3-month sentence for tax evasion of around $1.8 million in earnings, which she initially said she did not pay due to situations involving danger to her family. Hill also singed a recording contract with Sony earlier this year to ease her financial troubles, but she has still been sent to jail. She will not be in isolation for the 3 months of her sentence but will be among the general population.
During her time in court and battling the tax evasion conviction, Hill took to her Tumblr account to talk about how racism had played a role in this story. Here is an excerpt from a recent post:
"It doesn't escape me that many whites fleeing the oppression of feudal Europe ended up in the Americas. Unfortunately, Americans chose to perpetuate the trauma that they had experienced by victimizing others through the institution of slavery and a great number of other abuses. It is this tragic cycle of oppression that still needs to be broken and healed!"
Here is one of Lauryn's latest songs that came as a result of her deal with Sony earlier this year:
The singer included the following message when she originally released this song:
Here is a link to a piece that I was 'required' to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music... but the message is still there. In light of [the recent] tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today's unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!
