Kirko Bangz 'Cup Up Top Down': H-Town Rapper Squanders 'Drank In My Cup' Success With Lackluster Posse Cut
"Drank In My Cup" rapper Kirko Bangz goes back to the well (and finds it full of sizzurp) in the dark, Houston-repping posse track "Cup Up, Top Down."
Over a John Carpenter-esque piano line and occasional church bells, Bangz treads the familiar territory of Texas, cough syrup and styrofoam cups before cedeing the track to local icons Slim Thug, Z-Ro and an apparently still alive Paul Wall.
The track doesn't have anyway near the crossover appeal of "Drank In My Cup" with that tracks one-night stand storyline, massive hook and slinky, R&B guitar work noticeably absent. Surprisingly, "Cup Up Top Down" doesn't have a screwed section like "Drank." The Houston shoutout that nearly derailed his first major hit doesn't make an appearance in a song that is, arguably, one long shoutout to H-Town.
Kirko Bangz upcoming album The Progression III drops on August 12, but if this is the lead-off single, don't expect much.
