WATCH Madison Beer 'Melodies' Music Video: Justin Bieber Protégé Youthful in First Clip Complete With Cameo from 'Heartbreaker' Singer Himself [VIDEO]
Justin Bieber has himself a protégé. The "Heartbreaker" discovered tween Madison Beer on YouTube last year and promptly decided to make her a star. Since then, Beer has signed on with Bieber's manager Scooter Braun. Now, it's time for the 14-year-old's debut single, which dropped last night. The accompanying music video for "Melodies" dropped today (Sept. 12).
The video begins with a cameo from none other than Bieber himself, alongside his friend Ryan Butler. While listening to "Melodies" on the radio, the "Baby" singer tells his BFF, "You hear that, Ryan? That's a smash. She's gonna be a star. Trust me." The Biebz then sends along some signed Beats headphones (hey, product placement!) and a big purple bow along to Beer, who receives the package and puts them on to hear some sweet melodies in her head.
From there, the video takes on a youthful vibe (Beer is quite young, after all). The brown-haired singer struts down the street, hopping and singing along to her poppy track. There are also shots of Beer in front of a baby blue ice cream truck and hanging out with her teenaged friends on her block.
The song itself is standard, harmless pop. It's fitting for a young, rising starlet but "Melodies" isn't particularly memorable on its own. Standard lyrics like "And it's kinda like do, re, mi / About as easy as A, B, C / Beautiful like a symphony / I'm talking about you and me," are so tired out in the modern music era. A tribute to the Jackson 5 is great in theory, but it seems as though tons of new musical acts are doing the same thing and have been for years. Even the song's topic, connecting music to a new love, is a boringly common theme for debut singles.
But, with the power of Bieber, anything is possible. So, Beer may just have a hit on her hands, despite the song's lack of originality.
