YouTube is preparing for its first ever music awards ceremony and the video-hosting company aquired some high-profile headliners for the inaugural event. Lady Gaga, Eminem and The Arcade Fire have all just been announced as performers for the ceremony, with Spike Jonze directing and Jason Schwartzman hosting the awards show. The YouTube Music Awards takes place November 3, 2013.

YouTube's vice president of marketing, Danielle Tiedt, had this to say about the new awards ceremony:

"We're trying to create live videos during the award shows so that the experience becomes more about creating than presenting. Music is our bread and butter and our heart and soul here at YouTube. Our main goal is to not just do another award show. We wanted to do something special."

Tiedt also explained that the show will present winners for six award categories based entirely on results of viewer votes. This 90-minute live event will take place at New York City's Pier 36.

"In general, 90% of all views for live events happen after the event itself," Tiedt said. "The live event is a way to get people talking. Afterwards, it gets shared and shared."

The ceremony's creative director, Jonze, said he was looking forward to the challenge.

"I want to find out if we can make a whole night just about making things," Jonze said. "Instead of just doing performances, can we do live collaborations?"

He added: "There are no rules. Why does there have to be rules? It's the Internet."
