Game of Thrones Casts Major Character, Possibly Bloodraven?
The HBO smash hit Game of Thrones has cast a major character, and clues indicate that it could be Bloodraven, one of the most important characters in the series of George R.R. Martin novels known as A Song of Ice and Fire.
British actor Struan Rodger has joined the show as a major character in Bran's story arc, according to Zap2It. The character is introduced in the fifth novel, entitled A Dance With Dragons.
Rodger's online résumé lists the character as "Three-Eyed Raven" and hints at appearances in multiple episodes. A three-eyed raven appeared in Bran's visions earlier in the series in animal form, so it seems likely that Rodger's character will be the human form of the animal to whom Jojen and Meera are currently taking Bran in the show.
If all of the above is true, then Rodger would play Lord Brynded Rivers aka Bloodraven, who first appeared in A Dance With Dragons as the human form of the "Three-Eyed Raven." In the books, Bloodraven was believed to be a sorcerer. He was in fact a legitimized bastard son of Aegon IV Targaryen, the Hand of Aerys I and was Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. In addition, Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, which take place nearly 100 years before Game of Thrones, mention Bloodraven frequently.
The inclusion of the character further indicates that Game of Thrones is catching up to the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Martin will soon (-ish) release the sixth book in the series, which would hopefully buy the series some time before it reaches the end of the author's existing works.
