Eminem 'Rap God': Single From 'MMLP2' Draws Ire Of Openly Gay Rappers
In 2013, hearing a mainstream rapper use the words "gay" or "faggot" as an insult is so rare that, when it does pop up, it's jarring. True, homophobia is still a major problem in the rap community, but most commercially successful spitters have realized that railing against the LGBT community won't do their career any favors. That's why the playground-style gay-bashing lyrics of Eminem's latest Marshall Mathers LP 2 single "Rap God" stick out like a sore thumb, and several openly gay rappers have taken notice.
"When he invited me on his radio station [Shade 45] a few years ago, I thought he put all of this aside," said openly gay MC, Soloman. "He's using the word faggot to degrade another man. As if the worst thing a man can be is gay. What type of message does that embed into the minds of young kids, both gay and straight?"
Soloman's labelmate LastO, who is also gay, spoke out against Em's taunts.
"He's a lil' too old to be using gay and fag and shit as an insult; playground shit," he said. "It's ironic because I'm sure when he was coming of age, more black folks walked over him...than anyone gay ever did."
While Em using anti-gay slurs on his track is unquestionably a bad thing, I can't wait for Le1f to get on a diss track and show Slim Shady how good a double-time verse can truly get.
