Quincy Jones Sues Michael Jackson's Estate Over Royalties: Lawsuit Claims Jackson Estate, Sony Owe 'Thriller' Music Producer $10 Million
Michael Jackson was no stranger to controversy when he was alive, but even years after his death he finds himself embroiled in lawsuits and fighting. The latest lawsuit involves legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who is suing Michael Jackson's estate and Sony for allegedly cutting him short of his share of Jackson's music library according to TMZ. The allegations go even further, accusing Sony and Michael Jackson Productions of scheming to divert millions of dollars away from Jones.
This is just the latest of a number of lawsuits and court proceedings involving either Jackson's death or his estate. Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's death in 2009. Murray actually is expected to be released from a Los Angeles prison on Monday according to the New York Daily News.
A recent lawsuit surrounding Jackson's death was the Jackson family's wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG. A jury ruled that AEG was not negligent in Jackson's death and therefore, Jackson's mother and children shouldn't receive any money damages.
In this most recent lawsuit, Jones is seeking a minimum of $10 million according to TMZ. Jones claims he is owed money for his role in producing Jackson's hits such as "Off The Wall," "Thriller," and "Bad." The allegations don't stop there. Jones is also saying that Sony and Michael Jackson Productions edited and remixed some of Jackson's original songs and reused them in productions such as the "This Is It" movie, the 25th anniversary of "Bad" album, and the Cirque du Soleil show. Jones claims he is due royalties for those productions.
Sadly, it seems once one lawsuit or court drama ends, another one begins. Jackson is proving to be as riddled with controversy and drama in the years after his passing as he was while alive.
