Julianne Hough issues Twitter apology for blackface, racist 'Orange is the New Black' Halloween costume: 'Dancing with the Stars' performer darkened skin to portray 'Crazy Eyes'
Julianne Hough has learned a lesson about sensitivity and political correctness. Last night, she shocked fans around the country when photos surfaced of the former Dancing With the Stars dancer/actress/musician in blackface for her Orange is the New Black Halloween costume. Portraying the popular character "Crazy Eyes" (a.k.a. Suzanne), Hough darkened the skin on her face and neck as a part of a group costume effort.
Following the huge controversy due to the historical implications of blackface and racism in the US, Hough has realized the error of her ways and issued an apology on Twitter.
"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize," Hough wrote using the Twitter service Twitlonger.
Hough's apology skims the surface of the larger issue, but at least it is one small step.
With Halloween still five days away, it's unlikely Hough will be the only celeb to raise a few eyebrows with a questionable costume this year. However, hopefully she can be a lesson to others out there. Blackface is just not a good look.
