Jay Z sued over 'Run This Town' sample
Mannhattan-based label TufAmerica is suing Jay Z over an alleged bit of uncleared sample use. The lawsuit filed by the label claims that Jigga used samples from the 1969 Eddie Bo track "Hook and Sling" in his 2009 Rihanna collaboration "Run This Town." heyguysdidjahearslowpoke.jpg
The famous track among hip-hop heads has been sampled in several pop and rap classics such as "Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J, "SexyBack" by Justin Timberlake and no less than three Kanye West songs.
According to WhoSampled, "Hook and Sling" samples start at 1:03 in the "Run This Town" clip:
TufAmerica purchased the rights to Eddie Bo's track in 1996 and is seeking restitution for the alleged sample use that includes proceeds from the smash hit, punitive damages and a halt on all distribution of the song. This is the third suit that TufAmerica has brought against Jay Z this year. The previous two have been settled out of court.
