Ariana Grande teases new song 'Last Christmas' on Instagram: holiday track gets heavy-handed reworking for upcoming weekly series [LISTEN]
Christmastime here quite yet, but that doesn't mean music's upcoming stars aren't getting excited. Yesterday (Nov. 12), "Right There" singer Ariana Grande teased her first holiday single of the year, "Last Christmas" on her Instagram account, and this is sure to be one interesting December.
The short clip reveals Grande's spin on the classic 1984 Wham! track, which has since been covered by countless artists. In Grande's new version, "Last Christmas" gets a pop-heavy mix, courtesy of The Rascals and Babyface.
Grande is known for having a highly impressive, Mariah Carey-esque voice, but in the teased mix of "Last Christmas," that all gets lost in the music. Heavy, steady R&B drumbeats and a huge swell of synthetic instrument backing is almost on an equal level as Grande's vocals, making her softer notes blend in almost perfectly with the background. It's loud, it's a little messy, and it's not quite the best showing from Ariana Grande.
Of course, this is only one short snippet of the chorus of a much longer song. When the full thing drops on Nov. 19, it could show up in a completely different form.
Until then, listen to the Instagram snippet below.
Last week, Ariana Grande announced that she would be releasing one Christmas song every week for four weeks, leading up to the biggest holiday of the year. In a similar style to Justin Bieber's Music Mondays, each Tuesday will feature one new Grande holiday track.
In addition to standards like "Last Christmas," Grande assured her fans there will be "originals as well."
The first song drops next Tuesday.
