Jack Black and Tim Robbins set to star in the new HBO series 'The Brink'
Jack Black and Tim Robbins are planning to join the HBO team with the new series The Brink, produced by Jerry Weintraub, Jay Roach and Roberto Benabib. The Hollywood Reporter says the dark comedy, currently in pilot phase, will be about a geopolitical crisis and how it affects three men in particular.
Benabib previously worked with the popular series Weeds and will co-write the script with his brother Kim Benabib. Black and Robbins will also contribute as producers for the project.
Chemistry for Black and Robbins shouldn't be a stretch considering they have worked together before. In 1995's Dead Man Walking, Robbins was the director as Black had a role in the film. Apparently they had a lasting connection because ten years later Robbins showed up in Black's film, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.
The Brink story centers around three main characters. Black will play the part of Alex Coppins, a foreign service officer who is unfortunately stuck in the middle of the debacle. Robbins takes on the role of the high-tempered U.S. secretary of state, Walter Hollander. The third character is a Navy fighter pilot named Zeke Callahan, but no word on who will play that role yet.
Both actors have had their fair share of success in the industry, Black with movies like School of Rock and Bernie, and Mr. Show in the TV realm. And of course Robbins' performances in The Shawshank Redemption and Mystic River shook us all. But with the new show still at its pilot stage, there is still room for competition for the spot. Dwayne Johnson has a potential new show for the network called Pain & Gain.
Although it is still uncertain, with these writers, producers and the addition of Robbins and Black, this could end up being a huge addition for HBO and for TV.
