The Best Man Holiday, a follow up from the 1999 film The Best Man took charge at the box office on Friday, beating out Thor: The Dark World. The $17 million dollar film starring Taye Diggs and Terrence Howard grossed $10.7 million on its first day.

The first movie The Best Man made $9 million during its entire first weekend of release, so it looks like they are making significant progress with this second project. Especially when polled audiences gave the film an "A+" CinemaScore.

Thor: The Dark World didn't come far behind though with $10.5 million. As Entertainment Weekly reported: "It should handily climb past The Best Man Holiday on Saturday and Sunday and finish the frame with about $37 million. That would give the $170 million Marvel film about $145 million after 10 days - with much, much more overseas."

Right behind Thor was Last Vegas starring Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. The nature and stars of this movie have likely drawn an older crowd, which is a reliable target audience and has kept the film stable in the box office. But that doesn’t allow for huge peaks in sales like those of The Best Man and Thor: The Dark World, despite the impressive cast.

Below are the top five grossing films from Friday.

1. The Best Man Holiday – $10.7 million
2. Thor: The Dark World – $10.5 million
3. Last Vegas – $2.5 million
4. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa – $2.3 million
5. Free Birds – $1.8 million
