Beastie Boys' 'Girls' re-worked for viral, feminist toy commercial
As far as revered tracks in the history of rap music go, "Girls" by the Beastie Boys is like you're racist -great-grandpa who you ignore because he came from a different time. The wildly sexist track tends to get a pass (and is still regularly dropped into sets by DJs) due to its fun, lighthearted vibraphone beat and its association with the album Liscensed To Ill.
However, GoldieBlox (a toy company that makes engineering sets for, you guessed it, girls) has turned the themes of the original track on its head for a Rube Goldberg-ian commercial intended to get little girls interested in their construction lines.
There's very little more I could say that would do the ad justice, so just go ahead and look at it:
Princesses, they ain't.
