Vince Gilligan speaks out about Jesse's fate in 'Breaking Bad' series finale
One of the most pressing questions that came out of the series finale of Breaking Bad was the fate of beloved sidekick Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). We saw him driving off out of the meth compound after Walter White (Bryan Cranston) came in and killed all the Neo-Nazis, but we never actually saw where he went or what happened to him.
In a new interview with GQ, series creator Vince Gilligan finally spoke out about Jesse's fate. Or, at least, his own vision of it.
"My personal feeling is that he got away," Gilligan told the magazine.
In the final pages of the series finale script, Gilligan wrote that it's up to us to decide where Jesse went, but he likes to call it someplace better. So his words to GQ mesh with his original writings. But he wouldn't be Vince Gilligan if he didn't add this:
"But the most likely thing, as negative as this sounds, is that they're going to find this kid's fingerprints all over this lab and they're going to find him within a day or a week or a month," he said. "And he's still going to be on the hook for the murder of two federal agents."
That's not as rosy an outcome as fans would want for Jesse, but Gilligan's got a point. Still, he remained optimistic about the character. Whether it's true or not is up to us.
"But yeah, even though that's the most likely outcome, the way I see it is that he got away and got to Alaska, changed his name, and had a new life," Gilligan said. "You want that for the kid. He deserves it."
