Peaches Geldof could face charges after allegedly naming abuse victims of Lostprophets' Ian Watkins
The unfortunate news about Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins' history sexually abusing women and children has made headlines and was finalized just days ago in trial. But The daughter of former Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof, Peaches, allegedly tweeted the names of two abuse victims in the Watkins case. The tweet has since been deleted, but she is followed by 160,000 people, so the names were definitely seen. She apparently got the names from another person on Twitter.
Publishing the names of sexual offense victims is a crime, and for that reason Geldof could be facing a criminal investigation.
In two separate tweets, the Attorney General's office posted.
"We understand that the names of the co-defendants in the Ian Watkins case have been posted online. Victims of sex offences have lifetime anonymity. Publication of info which could identify them is a criminal offence & a police matter."
On Tuesday, the former Lostprophets member (the band has now officially broken up) told a court that he was a pedophile and pleaded guilty to 13 sexual offenses, which included attempting to rape a baby. As NME reported: "The 36-year-old musician, from Pontypridd, will be sentenced on December 18. Telling the jury that there would be no trial, Judge Justice Royce said: 'You have been saved from having to watch extremely graphic and distressing material.'"
Record store HMV, which has 140 stores in the U.K., has stated that they will no longer sell Lostprophets records and staff has currently been asked to remove all stock from the shelves.
It's unclear what the future looks like for Geldof following her now deleted tweet, but she will likely encounter continued backlash in the U.K.
