'RuPaul's Drag Race' teaser for season 6
Another drag queen will have the opportunity to make it to the top on RuPaul's Drag Race during its upcoming sixth season that starts in February. This installment looks to be one of the fiercest yet, reasonably so as the prize includes $100,000 and major bragging rights.
Fourteen queens will fight for the title, and RuPaul thinks this season will be intense. She told Entertainment Weekly this season "is rated 'BBB': 'Bitches Better Beware!'" She added, "Quite frankly, I'm scared of these queens."
The show has been massively popular since it's start in 2009. Back in September she talked to EW about what the start of the program felt like, specifically the premiere party. "The enthusiasm surrounding the show was so great that I knew that we had a hit on our hands," she said. "In fact, I never even got into the premiere party because it was so crowded. So actually I had a little party out in the parking lot - and even that was crowded."
She went on to talk about how the drag culture has faced a lot of adversity in the past, but there is a resurgence now and it has allowed a lot more appreciated freedom of expression. "People were celebrating the return of drag," she said about the premiere. "During the Bush administration drag and gender issues had really had to go underground, especially post-9/11. Culturally, people had taken on hostility and a certain ill feelings. The Obama era ushered in [a drag resurgence] - not because of him but as a result of a bigger cultural change that had happened - and our show represented that resurgence and that way of thinking of feeling with a certain openness. That was a real celebration for me. I knew that happy days were here again."
