The Voice Season 5 Top 5 contestant Tessanne Chin reveals devastating loss
Tessanne Chin is one of the Top 5 contestants on Season 5 of the wildly popular NBC singing competition The Voice. She is also one of three remaining members of Team Adam Levine. On Monday night, she sang Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and floored the coaches and fans alike with her emotional performance. But it almost didn't happen.
E! Online spoke with Chin after Monday night's show and the contestant revealed that she, at first, did not want to sing the song and was prepared to debate her mentor about it.
"I was in his kitchen when [Adam] told me the song, and I was like, 'What about this song?' and he just gets this look where you know there's no arguing," Chin said. "When he sets on, you just know. I was like OK. I tried a little bit of it in the kitchen and he was like, 'Tess, this is the song.'"
But a text message from her sister in which she "found out some very sad news" changed her mind.
"I got a text from my sister...we lost someone we know," Chin said. "It just kind of sidelined me."
Chin's performance of the song acted as her "way of getting through" the grief and the pain and she channeled that into her rendition. "It was therapy and that's music for me. It's not just being on stage singing," Chin said. "It's my way. It's my coping mechanism."
Chin and the other four competitors will find out their fates tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC during The Voice's results show.
