Ron Burgundy and the crew did pretty good for themselves this weekend, as far as box office scores go.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues opened strongly in second place behind the Hobbit. Will Ferrell's sequel made $26.8 million over the three-day weekend and $40 million since opening Tuesday night.

According to studio estimates, the Hobbit raked in $31.5 million in its second weekend of release for Warner Bros.

Anchorman 2 actually outperformed the Hobbit on Friday, but failed to best it over Saturday and Sunday.

It has been suggested that Anchorman will be more popular abroad than most comedies. The film made $13.4 million in six international markets.

The 2004 original film opened with $28.4 million, but only grossed $5.3 million internationally.

Don Harris, head of domestic distribution for Paramount Pictures had this to say:

"Anchorman will have a much larger footprint internationally than the last Anchorman did. Will Ferrell has done a really good job of turning this character into something that travels around the world."

The film brought in a little less than some analysts had predicted. The film cost $50 million to produce.

Frozen (Disney) was third, bringing in $19.2 million. According to Rentrak, Frozen has a five week total of $191.6 million.

American Hustle came in fourth. The film brought in $19.1 million.
