'Invisible' singer Clay Aiken is running for Congress in North Carolina
Former American Idol runner-up and professional recording artist Clay Aiken has announced that he is considering a career in politics. The openly gay singer is seriously thinking of a run for Congress in North Carolina's 2nd congressional district according to two Democratic sources close to the singer.
Reports are claiming that the LGBT activist has already taken steps in order to start his career in politics. Aiken has apparently examined survey data by meeting last month with pollsters at Hart Research Associates in Washington, D.C.
Currently, the seat eyed by Aiken is occupied by Republican Representative Renee Ellmers. Also, North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, a fellow Democrat, has started to explore a run as well.
CBS News reports:
Aiken, a 35-year-old native of Raleigh, N.C., has already taken some very preliminary steps toward a run, according to the Blade's sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. One source said Aiken had talked with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which is tasked with recruiting and boosting promising Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives. That same source also said Aiken has consulted with Betsy Conti, a political strategist in the Tarheel State who has worked with former Gov. Bev Purdue, D-N.C., and former Vice President Al Gore.
Do you think that Aiken would make a good Congressman? Is a career in politics a bold move for the singer or do you think he has what it takes for this new professional path? Let us know your opinions on this matter in the comments section below.
