In a way, the Doctor's final lines in the Christmas Special episode, "The Time of the Doctor," served as Smith's farewell to fans.
"We all change. When you think about it, we're all different people all through our lives," he said. "And that's OK, that's good, as long as you keep moving, as long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me."
Since he announced his departure from the series earlier in 2013, fans prepared themselves for this final moment. But it came and went, with plenty of pain and sadness. Smith was, for some, an introduction to the iconic series, so it was like saying farewell to a close friend. The Doctor is still around, but not with Smith's unique personality.
