Beastie Boys Square? Community Board considering motion to rename corner from 'Paul's Boutique' cover
The iconic corner portrayed on the cover of Paul's Boutique may soon be designated "Beastie Boys Square" in honor of the iconic rap trio. A lower Manhattan community board is set to debate the issue on Tuesday after petitions by Beastie fan LeRoy McCarthy gained traction.
The measure must be passed by the community board and then seconded by the City Council. McCoy thinks the renaming is a real possibility.
"They [City Council] are knowledgeable of hip-hop, a lot of them were raised on hip-hop - at their Sweet Sixteen parties and bar mitzvahs - so you don't have to explain to them who Biggie Smalls was," McCarthy said in an interview with the New York Post. "They don't necessarily have the preconceived negative approach to all hip-hop."
An unfortunate name to cite, no doubt, as attempts to name the street on which Biggie grew up "Christopher Wallace Way" failed miserably. However, naming a public space after the Beasties does have precedent, just ask the people who frequent Adam Yauch Park.
Adam "MCA" Yauch passed away in May 2012 from a battle with cancer. He sang and played bass in the band, which formed in 1981. Paul's Boutique was the second studio album released in 1989. It's been named one of the 500 Best Albums by Rolling Stone. The remaining Beastie Boys are still actively playing music all these decades later.
