Supernatural Season 9 Spoilers: Could Sam and Dean's brother Adam return?

Supernatural has enjoyed a creative renaissance in Season 9 that really began last season when showrunner Jeremy Carver took over and began to roll out his vision for the future of the show. The current season has been chock full of intriguing storylines that have expanded the already rich mythology of the show, but there's one loose thread that has bugged fans for years.

The show introduced Sam and Dean's half brother, Adam Milligan, in Season 4. He returned in Season 5 and wound up as the vessel for the archangel Michael. Unfortunately, he tumbled into Lucifer's Cage with Sam, who was possessed by Lucifer. Sam got out, but Adam has been down there ever since and fans have wondered if and when the Winchesters would get around to springing him loose.

Carver spoke to the "Mega Buzz" column at TV Guide and offered the following information:

"Adam has been trapped in the cage on Supernatural since Season 5. Is he ever getting out of Hell? -Sarah
Unfortunately, Adam is not one of the many familiar faces returning to Supernatural this season, but there is some hope to see the third Winchester brother again. 'As long as he's in the cage, there's always a chance,' showrunner Jeremy Carver says. 'He's not coming out tomorrow, but there's always a chance.'"

It does seem out of character for the Winchesters to let their half-brother suffer an eternity of torment, but between Eve, the Leviathans and the fallen angels, they had plenty on their plate.

What do you think, Supernatural fans? Will Adam ever return? Let us know in the comments below.
