Jay Z facing another lawsuit, this time it involves the Brooklyn Nets
Jay Z has just been slapped with yet another lawsuit but this time he's being sued alongside the NBA and developer Bruce Ratner over the Brooklyn Nets logo.
It took quite some time to get the franchise to move from New Jersey to Brooklyn but Radar Online reports that a clever doctor/entrepreneur claims that he trademarked the name "Brooklyn Nets" long before the team moved from Jersey.
Early last month, Dec. 9 to be exact, Dr. Francois de Cassagnol, filed a pro se complaint with the Eastern District of the State of New York asking for $600 million in damages, at least.
De Cassagnol claims that Jay Z, the NBA and Ratner used some type of trickery to steal his name. His says that they "fraudulently conspired" to use "loopholes" in the U.S. Patent Office so that they could use a name he says he registered more than ten years ago.
And it looks like he may be on to something.
Documents submitted as evidence show that de Cassagnol filed applications in 2012 for "The Brooklyn Nets Entertainment Logo." The name was first used in the State of Louisiana back in 2003.
De Cassagnol also claims that he spoke with officials at the New Jersey Nets organization before the team moved to Brooklyn and was assured that the team would not be using the name "Brooklyn Nets." He was under the impression that the team would be using the name "New York Nets."
A previous appeal to the Patent Office found in favor of the NBA but de Cassagnol seems determined to get what he says is due.
