Marvel's 'Ant-Man' movie takes DC's 'Batman vs. Superman' spot in July 2015

News broke last week that Warner Bros. decided to push the highly anticipated Man of Steel sequel, commonly known as Batman vs. Superman, from July 17, 2015 until May 2016. The new date means that the superhero team-up would go head-to-head with a yet-to-be-revealed Marvel Phase Three film. But in a somewhat ironic twist, a Marvel film has scooped up DC's original slot.

Marvel has moved up the release date of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man, which stars Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, by two weeks to July 17, 2015. This is a much smaller leap than when Marvel originally moved the film from a Nov. 2015 release date to July 2015.

This means that Ant-Man will compete with Joe Wright's Peter Pan origin movie (known for now as Pan). It also means that July 2015 is no longer an overcrowded month at the box office, as Batman vs. Superman, Independence Day 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean 5, all of which were initially scheduled for July 2015 release dates, have been delayed.

It remains to be seen if either Marvel or DC will make a move for May 6, 2016 and relinquish their release date so as not to compete directly with the rival company, but only time will tell. For now, moviegoers must choose between Batman vs. Superman and the Marvel movie (possibly Doctor Strange or Iron Man 4) on that date.
