33 couples wed during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' Grammy performance of 'Same Love'
Love was in the air last night (Jan. 26) at the 56th annual Grammy Awards and four-time winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis set the stage for a very touching and monumental moment.
The duo took to the stage to perform their hit "Same Love." They were joined by Mary Lambert, Queen Latifah and Madonna.
During the performance, Queen Latifah called on 33 straight and same-sex couples who took their marriage vows before an unsuspecting crowd. The couples represented all demorgraphics including interracial and varying age range.
Latifah officiated the ceremony stating "by the power vested in me" as the couples exchanged wedding rings and embraced one another.
As a part of the ceremony, Madonna performed her classic "Open Your Heart."
Lance Bass, former member of 'NSYNC, shared his thoughts on the performance with MTV. Here's what he had to say:
"I thought it was amazing, history was definitely made. The Grammys are one of the biggest stages in the world, and to make such a statement, it was incredible. Everyone around the world was watching, and it was exactly the message people needed to see: that love is love."
