Watch Jimmy Fallon hands 'Late Night' reigns to Seth Meyers with a ceremonial 'Passing of a Giant Pickle' [VIDEOS]
When Conan O'Brien took over the Late Night slot from David Letterman many years ago (1993), he was gifted a giant pickle. Conan returned the odd favor when Jimmy Fallon took on the gig (2009), and this week, Seth Meyers received the ceremonial pickle since he's taking over on February 24, 2014. This is all true and wild!
Here is a letter from Conan to Jimmy, explaining why he just gave him a giant pickle:
Jimmy,
The Letterman people sent this pickle to my office in 1993, just before I went on the air. They said it's been in their office since the beginning and now they were passing it on to me. So now I am passing it on to you. Whenever you're done, which won't be for a long time, make sure you pass it on to the next sap.
Knock 'em dead,
Conan.
Before this week's televised passing of the pickle, this was not widely known as tradition except to those involved. Luckily, Fallon made a video blog back in 2009 about it, so you can check that out right here:
Not wanting his viewers to miss out on this ridiculous tradition, Fallon invited his successor onto Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this week and gave him the giant pickle.
So check out this historical moment of Jimmy Fallon symbolically handing off the reigns of Late Night to Seth Meyers by handing him a giant pickle that may or may not be tied to the show somehow:
