Andrea Cardosa arrested, former student Jamie Carrillo exposes disturbing sexual abuse on YouTube [VIDEO]: California educator charged with 16 felonies
Reports confirm that the Riverside County District Attorney's Office charged former California educator Andrea Michelle Cardosa with five counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child and 11 counts of lewd acts on a child. Cardosa was arrested on Monday evening (February 3). These sexual abuse allegations were initially exposed by 28-year-old Jamie Carrillo in a shocking YouTube video - she claims that she was first abused by Cardosa when she was just 12-years-old.
As Mstars previously reported:
Jamie Carrillo is now a 28-year-old mother of two - but back in middle and high school, she was sexually abused several times by basketball coach Andrea Cardosa. Carrillo finally decided to confront Cardosa about their inappropriate student-teacher relationship during a phone conversation years later - she even recorded the confession and posted it on Youtube. The disturbing audio quickly went viral, and Cardosa officially resigned from her position as Alhambra High School's Vice Principal on January 17.
The abuse allegedly started when Carrillo was a pre-teen - and it continued on for years. Here's the emotional phone conversation where Carrillo gets Cardosa to admit her wrongdoings:
VERBAL EXCHANGE:
JAMIE: "So what happens when a student comes in and says that they're having a sexual relationship with a teacher?"
TEACHER: "I would involve law enforcement."
JAMIE: "So how is that any different from what you did (years ago)?"
TEACHER: "It's not."
JAMIE: "Do you realize that you brainwashed me, and you manipulated me, and that what you did was wrong?"
TEACHER: "Yes. And I regret it."
JAMIE: "You should be so ashamed and so disgusted with yourself."
TEACHER: "I am. I am."
Before the viral footage even hit the web, Cardosa resigned. Officials at Alhambra High School released a statement insisting that Cardosa's resignation came after they saw the YouTube video and confronted her about the troubling allegations on January 17:
"At the conclusion of that interview the Alhambra High School administrator tendered her resignation. Alhambra Police department will be handing this matter over to the jurisdiction of the appropriate police Department."
Cardosa allegedly went into hiding.
At a press conference outside of the school on Monday (January 20), Carrillo told reporters - "The reason why I wanted to do this was to expose her for what she really was and to protect other kids, because she shouldn't be around anyone's kids."
Carrillo is shocked that Cardosa never actually apologized during the heated exchange.
Police soon launched an investigation - some supporters of Carrillo were worried due to the statute of limitations, considering the alleged abuse took place over 10 years ago.
But ultimately, Cardosa was arrested and charged with 16 felony counts of child sex abuse.
Following Carrillo's allegations, another 18-year-old female victim also stepped forward, accusing Cardosa of such disturbing crimes. This person remains unidentified.
In a written statement released by Cardosa's lawyer Randy Collins, he says that in the face of "very public claims of abuse," it would be his task "to see that justice prevails in the midst of the media wildfire."
Collins also stated, "Fortunately, our justice system requires more than a YouTube video to determine the facts of a case. As we proceed, I am certain that evidence will shed new light on all charges filed by the D.A.'s office against my client."
According to Collins, Cardosa was grateful for the "outpouring of support from her family, friends, colleagues, and students during this difficult time."
John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office, said there is no statute of limitations on the most serious charge involving aggravated sexual assault on a child under 14.
Cardosa is expected to be arraigned Thursday (February 6). She could face possible life in prison if convicted of the aggravated sexual assault charges.
