Broken Bells cover The Beatles on Letterman

Broken Bells kicked off Letterman's week-long tribute to the Beatles in the biggest way that a duo possibly could. Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (of The Shins) took on the Fab Four classic "And I Love Her" in a performance that could be read as a nod to Burton's past.

Burton got his start in the music business via the notoriety of his Grey Album, a remix album that took the a cappella vocals from Jay Z's Black Album provided to DJs and mashed it up with Beatles' White Album samples. It was hard not to think of this (as far as I know) unnoffical music video while watching Burton chop of Ringo Starr drum samples with appropriate visual accompaniement on an old console television.

Broken Bells are the first of many acts celebrating the 50th anniversary of Beatles Ed Sullivan appearance. The Flaming Lips and Sting with both stop by the show this week and several more famous musicians will appear in A Grammy Salute To The Beatles.
