The Walking Dead beats Olympics in ratings, plus Andrew Lincoln comments on the midseason premiere
The Winter Olympics are an event that comes but once every four years as the greatest athletes in the world vie for gold medals and the pride of their nations. But apparently more people cared about fake zombies than real athletes, as AMC's The Walking Dead, which comfortably beat the Olympics in the adults 18-49 demographic.
The AMC hit hauled in 15.8 million viewers and an 8.2 demo rating, while the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics broadcast on Sunday night hauled in a 5.9 rating. This was the most-watched midseason premiere yet for The Walking Dead, which had a 28 percent increase from the Season 3 return. The episode, entitled "After," narrowly missed the Season 4 premiere, which amassed 16.1 million viewers in the film.
"With a number of high-profile choices on television last night, for The Walking Dead to deliver record ratings is remarkable. Thanks to the fans, who have been so supportive of this show in so many ways. We share your passion for this world," said AMC president Charlie Collier, according to EW.com. "Chocolate pudding for all!"
Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, spoke to EW.com and talked about the relationship between Rick and Carl in the episode:
"It's almost shot-for-shot from the comic, and it was always the most emotional part of the comic when I read it. I think everybody relates to that. Every man relates to that story because someone said to me years ago, 'You never get bigger to your father.' That's the secret to a happy life, but everybody has to. So much of being a teenager is about finding your own voice, finding your own way, including your parents. So I loved it. I felt charmed by it. It was very moving to be involved in it. I spent most of my time on the couch - it was beautiful! I kicked back and let the kid work. I'm hoping this is my future! [Laughs] But it was an amazing moment, this child turning into this young adult. And you see the crew all watch him and have these satisfied smiles and see this young man lead the show. It was a very cool experience."
