ICYMI: Rihanna claims she went bankrupt and the odds are in her favor, singer wins multi-million dollar settlement against former accountant
Rihanna recently made headlines are claiming that she had gone "effectively bankrupt" back in 2009 with the help of her accountant. The Bajan singer promptly filed a lawsuit and word on the street is Rih Rih's pockets just got a little fatter.
According to Page Six, Rihanna sued claiming she had been misadvised by accountant Peter Gounis and the firm Berdon LLP when they gave her the green light to buy a $7 million Southern California house.
"The defendants advised Ms. Fenty by e-mail that purchasing a home in Los Angeles 'would be a good investment' despite knowing Ms. Fenty was experiencing financial difficulties," Rihanna's lawyer Edward Estrada wrote.
"Ms. Gouins failed to disclose these issues to Ms. Fenty and instead allowed her to spend over $1 million on improvements and renovations, even though it was not prudent to continue renovating ... as the overall costs of the property far exceeded its value due to the defects and damage," Estrada went on to say.
Rihanna and her lawyer claim that she lost $9 million and was left with a mere $2 million at the end of 2009.
The pop star's lawyer says Gounis was aware the house she was buying was rotting from water and mold damage. She was subsequently forced to spend more than $1 million on improvements before selling it for nearly $2 million less than what she paid.
Rihanna fired the accountants and sued them for $35 million in 2012.
It has been reported that the firm has offered Rihanna a $10 million settlement.
That's probably chump change to her. Rihanna is reportedly worth an estimated $43 million.
