Lady Gaga showed up last night on Jimmy Fallon's second day as host of the Tonight Show to prove a point: in spite of a year that included hip surgery, management problems and potentially disastrous album release, she's still one of the best performers in the world today.

Mother Monster tore the roof off with a rendition of "ARTPOP", complete with reflective grand piano verses, loads of dry ice fog and a full-on Yoko dance.

Fallon kicked off his run in the world's most coveted late night spot with a slew of celebrities giving him $100, including the famously banned Joan Rivers.

"It's about time!" Rivers stated about her return. "I've been sitting in a taxi outside NBC with the meter running since 1987. It was a double thrill for me to help welcome Jimmy on his first night. The program brought me great luck, and I know it will do the same for him."

Rivers added a prediction, saying that she believes Fallon will go on to surpass all of his NBC forebears.
