Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" music video is the best clip of 2014 (so far)

Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" was an interesting if not great song that managed to get trap to the top of the Billboard charts without a quickly irritating viral fad. On the other hand, the video for "Dark Horse" is unquestionably incredible and an early contender for music video of the year.

The video is set in "Memphis, Egypt, a crazy long time ago" and that should tell you just about all you need to know about the tone of this clip. It's a wacky romp through a color-bombed Egypt with Katy-patra at the center.

Potential suitors bring Queen Katy gifts that range from diamonds to hot cheetos in a video that is everything a pop music video should be. 2013's music video crop was weighed down by the double whammy of over-the-top sexualization and serious arty nudity from Miley Cyrus (not to mention the droll nonsense that was The 20/20 Experience). Perry knows that pop music videos should be high-budget, high-concept and overall fun, showing what can be done when you have a gargantuan production budget and an army of yes men.

For Perry, that means walking up a CGI pyramid and turning into a glittery Faravahar.

Do yourself a favor and give it a watch (or seven).
