Former England Star Sol Campbell Launches Scathing Attack Against His Country
Sol Campbell was once one of the Premier League's finest defenders, and was also a force at the back for his country England, too. During his career he was no stranger from controversy, leaving Tottenham Hotspurs for their bitter rivals Arsenal, making him one of the most hated figures in England. Now his career has been and gone it appears he's not ready to leave the drama behind, and he has launched a scathing attack on the English Football Association, claiming they're "institutionally racist".
The former England defender was a key part of the English defense, but he feels he deserved more, stating that he would have been the England captain for over 10 years if he had been white. The Daily Mail has published previews of the astonishing autobiography, in which Campbell explains"I believe that if I was white I would have been England captain for 10 years." The defender's accusation comes as a huge surprise as he featured 73 times for England, and in his biography he hasn't held back. One can wonder whether he feels this way, or as some have suggested, is merely trying to create a hype for the upcoming release of his autobiography.
In it, he says he was overlooked for the captaincy, which was awarded to Michael Owen, because of the colour of his skin. He doesn't stop there, he also states that Michael Owen was only awarded the captaincy for being white. Campbell continued "Michael Owen was made captain ahead of me and I thought, "What's going on here?" I think the FA didn't want me to have a voice."
This isn't likely to be the end of the matter, and it appears Campbell feels hard done by. Will Campbell be punished for his harsh words if he's proven to be wrong? Many footballers have already laughed off his suggestion via social media, so it appears he will achieve nothing other than a bigger sales rate for his book.
