Justin Masterson pitches a gem as Cleveland Indians win 2-0, but will player get new contract he desires?
Through the bad and the good times one thing has remained the same for the Cleveland Indians, and that's their star pitcher Justin Masterson. Their ace has one season remaining and both parties have stated their intent to extend the deal, but they've failed to agree terms. Perhaps the Tribe will reconsider now he's played his first fame of the season and pitched impressively in their 2-0 opening day victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Masterson pitched seven scoreless innings and looked like he'd been delivering this form for a while, not starting the season in a blaze of glory. The Tribe made it to the postseason last year and it seems their ace wants to do that again this season. The Indians have had little worry about their offensive power, but they were worried about their pitching. On this performance they have little to worry about.
The pitching duel came to life in the top of the ninth when the Indiana got the 2 runs they needed to secure their victory. Nick Swisher's RBI single made the difference, and gave closer John Axford a cushion to work with in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tribe will be looking to start the season in the same manner they finished the last one, being an unstoppable force. If they can find that form they'll be a top contender to make it back to the playoffs in 2014. Can they go all the way, or will the Tribe simply make up the numbers when September comes around?
