Nikolaj Coster-Waldau previews Jaime Lannister's arc in Game of Thrones Season 4

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a fan favorite actor on Game of Thrones for numerous reasons even though he plays the at times despicable Jaime Lannister. The character can be a world-class jerk and he sleeps with his own sister. Lovable, am I right?

But he also brought some heart to Jaime in Season 3, during which he finally returned to King's Landing and reunited with Cersei (Lena Headey). But the actor told EW.com that the two are not about to just fall back into each other's arms.

"For him, it's been a very traumatic trip," he said. "But he's been wanting to get back to this woman for the duration of his trip. You want to just go back to the way it was. But it's not that easy. A lot has happened in her life as well."

Jaime was imprisoned and lost his hand, which is kind of a big deal when you're part of the royal Kingsguard. Plus, it could affect his love life.

"In (Cersei's) mind, he was the strongest soldier, the strongest man and he could always protect her," the actor said.

But Coster-Waldau pointed out that this relationship has never been the healthiest one.

"I think he loves her more. It's always been unbalanced, and that's never good," he said. "Most of us have been in that situation where you've been falling in love with somebody who didn't feel the same way. It's not a nice situation. We did this panel and Lena said something interesting. She said at a deep level, she wants to be him. She likes the game of thrones, but her life is about doing what her dad wants her to do."

Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) also made Jaime promise to protect Catelyn Stark's daughters, but that won't be the easiest promise to keep, particularly because Sansa (Sophie Turner) is married to Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).

"There's a moment where they come back and he's like: 'What happened didn't really happen. Can't I just become what I was before?'" Coster-Waldau said. "And she's like, 'What about that promise?' A year ago he would have said 'shut up and go away,' but now it's like, 'I guess I have to deal with this."

As for an actual romance between Jaime and Brienne, the actor advises fans not hold their collective breath.

"I don't think he's aware of any romance," he said. "On a fundamental level he respects and cares for this woman. I don't think he's thought of it." He then added with a grin, "He's a monogamous man."
