How I Met Your Mother alternate series finale will be revealed

The How I Met Your Mother series finale was controversial to say the least. Some fans loved the way co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas wrapped up the show's nine-season journey, while others hated it with a passion.

The final moments revealed that Ted's wife, Tracy, got sick and passed away six years prior to his telling his children the HIMYM story in 2030. They encourage him to go after Aunt Robin, which he does by holding up the Blue French Horn outside her apartment.

But the fans who disliked the show's ending might soon get their wish, as Bays revealed in a series of tweets on Friday that an alternate ending for the series will be included on the complete series DVD box set, as well as the Season 9 DVD.

"Here's a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," he wrote. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother."

Bays also thanked the fans and noted, "If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends."
