Blood Moon - sounds sort of creepy!

But in fact, the phenomenon is a beautifully rare solar occurrence - a "total lunar eclipse."

In layman terms, here's what will happen on Monday evening (April 14, 2014):

The moon will turn to blood as it aligns with Earth and sun.
Then do so thrice more ere a year and a half is done,
'Tis not the herald of the apocalypses
Just the first of four total lunar eclipses.

(Via CNN).

And the coolest thing is, several observers around the world (especially in Hawaii) will be able to experience this year's first Blood Moon!

According to Khon2, this is "the first total lunar eclipse visible anywhere on earth in more than two years."

The lunar eclipse is expected to begin around 7:58 p.m. (PST), when the moon crosses into the earth's shadow. The "total" phase of the eclipse happens when the sun enters the picture - that begins around 9:06 p.m. The earth will remain directly between the sun and moon for 70 minutes after that.

Those on the East Coast will have to stay up much later to watch the spectacle (weather permitting).

Check out an awesome slideshow of some amazing Blood Moon photos, along with more fun facts and info.

And for those with an obstructed view, NASA will host two live streams of the celestial event.

During the entire eclipse, NASA astronomer Mitzi Adams and astrophysicist Alphonse Sterling will answer fan questions through a live chat on NASA's official website. Also, the Marshall Space Flight Center will offer a live stream via Ustream.

Enjoy the show!
