Ellen DeGeneres's Oscar Selfie Valued at $1 Billion.
Ellen DeGeneres may have taken the selfie game to a whole new level. The photo that the comedian took at this past Academy Awards is now one of the most valuable selfies in the world. After posting the picture on Twitter during the award show, it became the most retweeted photo ever. CEO of Publicis, a Paris-based global advertising and marketing firm, Maurice Levy values the selfie at anywhere between $800 million to $1 billion.
Publicis handles marketing for Samsung, the brand of phone that the now famous selfie was taken on. Levy said that his team handled the Samsung product placement during the award show. The estimated price of the photo is based on how many shares it has gotten. A majority of the 43 million people who viewed the award show took to Twitter to see the photo, 37 million people shared it to be exact, that Ellen exclusively posted on the social media site.
The photo features appearances by Jared Leto, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Strep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie to name a few.
When facing challenged on how to create advertising for a population that divides their attention between multiple device Levy says, "I don't think the world is an 'or' I think the world is an 'and.' There is an infinite number of possibilities with interactive."
Many people are bothered by what is considered to be genuine and what is fake when it comes to product placement. Rumors are saying that Ellen was paid by Samsung to snap the picture to promote their phone on the air during the award show.
