Simon Kinberg says 'X-Men Days of Future Past' will correct past mistakes

X-Men: Days of Future Past writer and producer Simon Kinberg replaced director Bryan Singer on the WonderCon panel for the film over the weekend, as Singer is in the midst of a graphically detailed sexual abuse lawsuit. During his time on the panel, Kinberg revealed a nugget of information about the upcoming mutant movie.

The film will involved time travel, which has caused fans to speculate how it might affect the previous films in the X-Men franchise and any films in the future. During the panel, Kinberg admitted some past missteps with the movies and said Days of Future Past should correct them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"This and the Dark Phoenix are out two most famous stories. We could have done better with the Dark Phoenix," he said in reference to the plotline from X-Men: The Last Stand, which fans and critics alike largely hated. "This is out attempt to right the wrongs [of] the past."

It remains to be seen how DOFP would go about fixing these problems, but [SPOILER ALERT] some reports have suggested the movie ends with a fractured timeline, one that follows the original trilogy and one that follows the X-Men: First Class series. If so, it would explain some of the many plot inconsistencies throughout the movies. [END OF SPOILER ALERT] 

It's also unclear if Kinberg's statement was literal, or if he just meant that he, Singer and the rest of the crew wanted to make the best X-Men movie possible in order to make up for other lackluster efforts.
