Elvis Presley biopic movie eyes Baz Luhrman as director

It looks like Baz Luhrman's The Great Gatsby follow-up film project could be a biopic based on the life and music of Elvis Presley. Reports claim the Moulin Rouge director is in negotiations to take on the ambitious project, and we believe that the man responsible for all of the over-the-top and lush movies on his filmography can take on "The King."

The Wrap reports:

Director Baz Luhrmann is in negotiations to join the iconic singer, who is the subject of an untitled biopic being written by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey, Saving Mr. Banks), TheWrap has learned.

Marcel is hard at work writing an original screenplay about Elvis Presley, the hip-gyrating King of Rock and Roll, that will not be based on any pre-existing material. While the project is believed to be a biopic, it's unclear which periods of Presley's life would be depicted in the film.

Warner Bros. has secured rights to all musical components in Presley's catalog, multiple individuals familiar with the project told TheWrap. Luhrmann has been in negotiations for several weeks and should his deal close, it's expected that his wife, Oscar winner Catherine Martin, would board the project as costume designer and possibly as production designer as well.

Do you think Luhrman is the right director for this biopic? He's received plenty of criticism over the years and, like basically every other director, has developed a certain style that he is known for - namely the movie musical, but also his ability to go "above and beyond" with design and imagery. Case in point: The Great Gatsby, Australia, Romeo and Juliet ... well, all of his films.

But isn't that kind of perfect for an Elivs Presley movie? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!
