England manager Roy Hodgson announces his squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil
England, the home of soccer, are sad today that their beloved domestic league, the Premier League, finishes this weekend, but they're equally as excited to watch their nation compete at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Today, one day after the domestic season finished, Roy Hodgson announced his squad that he'll take to next months tournament. Here's the squad:
- Joe Hart
-
Fraser Forster
-
Ben Foster
-
Glen Johnson
-
Phil Jones
-
Gary Cahill
-
Phil Jagielka
-
Chris Smalling
-
Leighton Baines
-
Luke Shaw
-
Steven Gerrard
-
Jack Wilshere
-
Jordan Henderson
-
Frank Lampard
-
James Milner
-
Ross Barkley
-
Adam Lallana
-
Raheem Sterling
-
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
-
Wayne Rooney
-
Daniel Sturridge
-
Danny Welbeck
-
Rickie Lambert
The biggest shocks were the exclusion of Chelsea and Manchester United's veteran duo of Ashley Cole and Michael Carrick. The pair have been long-time greats, but Roy opted for the young, exciting pair of Luke Shaw and Jordan Henderson instead. Can this squad me a World Cup success, or is it going to be a mere trip for experience purposes only? It will be the last World Cup for Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
Perhaps the squad will miss the experience, but Germany tried taking youth before and it only benefited the team in later tournaments. Perhaps England can reap the rewards and shift these prospects in to cultured and experienced players.
Can England win the World Cup, or will they be making up the numbers?
