Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Producers Confirmed: Team Behind 'Social Network' Movie
"Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James has found producers for the film adaptation of the bestselling novel. Movie producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who collaborated on the Oscar-nominated hit "The Social Network", will re-team for the film, Universal Pictures and Focus Features said Monday, according to Hollywood Reporter.
"At its core, "Fifty Shades of Grey" is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen," Universal co-chairman Donna Langley told Hollywood reporter. "Mike and Dana's credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners, and we're glad to have them as part of our team."
Universal and Focus acquired rights to the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy for $5 million in March during a Hollywood bidding war. The book is about a torrid love affair between a college student and a mysterious billionaire, having sold 31 million digital and print copies worldwide.
Film producers De Luca and Brunetti have experience bringing books to screen. They collaborated with producer Scott Rudin on "Social Network", which was based on the non-fiction book "The Accidental Billionaires". De Luca also produced last year's hit Oscar-nominated baseball movie "Moneyball" which starred Brad Pitt.
Focus' CEO James Schamus issued this statement about the producers to Hollywood Reporter: "Michael De Luca is a dream producer, whose combination of vision, taste and fearlessness is the perfect match for "Fifty Shades of Grey. I am thrilled that Mike has joined Team Fifty. He brings a passion for and in-depth understanding of the characters and story and a wealth of experience in making quality films."
James has already earned $50 million from sales of "Fifty Shades of Grey", according to Hollywood Reporter. Book publisher Vintage, a division of Random House, confirmed U.S. sales of the trilogy are expected to surpass 20 million copies this week, according to Hollywood Reporter.
As of July 2, sales stood at 9.8 million paperback copies and 9.6 million digital copies for a total of 19.4 million copies sold. Add in another 12 million books sold abroad, and worldwide sales top 31 million copies since Vintage published the trilogy series in March.
Author E.L. James selected UK-based Caroline Mickler Ltd. to be the global licensing agent for merchandise based on the best-selling trilogy. Mickler is considering producing "Fifty Shades of Grey"-inspired lingerie, sleepwear, apparel, fragrances, beauty products, bedding, home furnishings, and stationery, jewelry and adult products aimed at adult women.
