Marvel Comics Takes Aim At Artist David Marquez’s ‘Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man!’ Teases Preview Art For ‘Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #2!’ [Twitter Photo]
Spidey fans came out in droves when Marvel Comics released Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1 in stores. Everyone wanted to know how what happened to Miles Morales and the rest of the Ultimate Universe after Galactus wiped off New Jersey from the face of the map.
Miles Morales has been through some tough spots after taking over for Peter Parker and donning the Spider-Man costume. First, his mother was murdered by Spider-Man's most hated enemy, Venom. At the conclusion of Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man, after saving the Ultimate Universe from the devourer Galactus, Miles revealed himself and took off his mask in front of his father.
[Spoilers] In Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1, Miles has not seen his father since the events of Cataclysm. His father ran away angrily, blaming Miles for his wife's death. Will Miles' father return as a major villain and try to kill his own son in the follow-up issue?
In an interview with Marvel, Marquez explains why close-ups are integral to Miles' story arcs, "I really focus on the subtle little expressions that can sell, confused horror, say, and distinguish it from simple surprise. And for that, often a real nice close-up gives the reader a chance to really see what's going on. But no matter how much fun it may be to play with crazy camera angles or creative layouts, the story always has to come first. Storytelling is always first."

Marquez describes illustrating the intimate moments after such an epic event in Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man, "As with anything I draw, for me it really boils down to the characters and what they go through emotionally. We saw Miles have to deal not only with the impending destruction of the world, but he was also abandoned by his sole remaining parent. So while the Ultimate Universe survived, his world in a very real way, ends."
