Ryan Giggs retires: Instantly becomes Louis Van Gaal's Manchester United assistant manager

Ryan Giggs was the kid that nobody thought could make it, but after nearly twenty years at one club, he's achieved everything possible. It looked like his playing days were nearing their end, and when David Moyes was fired he got the chance to add 'Manchester United interim manager' to his resume, and now he can add 'Manchester United assistant manager', too. Today Louis Van Gaal was confirmed as the club's new manager, with Ryan Giggs being his assistant.

Many were wondering if Ryan would be a player still, but he quickly retired from the game to fully focus on his newly found coaching duties. Giggs played over 1,000 senior appearances for club and country combined, showing the durability the 40-year-old was able to maintain. The long-serving star was handed his first start in 1991, thanks to former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and he stayed by his side for the rest of his managerial career.

The Wales international also appeared for Team GB at the Olympics, showing that he could lead his nation at a massive stage. Sadly, Wales never got the chance to really showcase his talents on the biggest stage. His 23-year career oversees many records that are likely to never be broken, including 13 Premier League titles with United.

Will Ryan Giggs be a good assistant manager, and will he eventually be Louis Van Gaal's replacement when he decides to retire? Sadly, this may be one of the last one-team players the English Premier League ever sees.
