Michael C. Hall Addresses Critically Panned Dexter Series Finale
Dexter wrapped its eight-season run on Showtime in September with a critically panned series finale that viewers largely despised. Now, star Michael C. Hall, who played the titular serial killer, has broken his silence on the final episode.
[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]
As a refresher, the finale killed Dexter's sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), and Dexter went out to sea in the middle of a storm. He inexplicably winds up in the middle of nowhere as a lumberjack and has seemingly faked his own death.
The fans who watched it mostly hated it, but Hall confessed to The Daily Beast that he didn't even lay eyes on it.
"Liked it? I don't think I even watched it," Hall said of the finale. "I thought it was narratively satisfying - but it was not so savory.
"I think the show had lost a certain amount of torque," he continued. "Just inherently because of how long we'd done it, because of the storytelling capital we'd spent, because our writers may have been gassed... Maybe some people wanted a more satisfying - maybe they wanted a happy ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure."
The final episode has landed on several lists of worst series finales because of the nonsensical maneuvers and lack of logical developments. When the star of the show admits that the work was not so good, then you know it was probably loaded with problems.
