22 Beginner Dothraki Language Phrases from Game of Thrones

The Dothraki first appeared on Game of Thrones in the very first episode when Khal Drogo and his people join with Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and her associates. The Dothraki have their own unique language and customs, and we've got your beginners' guide right here.

So let's put this guide to use and apply it to the latest Game of Thrones episode, entitled "The Mountain and the Viper." The episode featured the much-anticipated showdown between Oberyn and The Mountain to decide Tyrion's fate. Oberyn had the upper hand for much of the fight, until he started taunting his opponent, who promptly flipped him over and SPLIT HIS FACE OPEN WITH HIS BARE HANDS.

At that moment, you would likely utter the Dothraki phrase "Ki fin yeni?!," which translates to "What the heck?!" We'll assume that there's probably a saltier and more appropriate word for this moment than "heck" but let's stick with the basics for now.

Before the fight, though, Oberyn had a moment with his wife and with Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). A Dothraki might have told him "Fonas chek," or "hunt well," before he went into battle against the hulking warrior.  If Oberyn were Dothraki, he would have expressed his love to his wife with the phrase "Jalan atthirari anni," or "the moon of my life. His wife, in return, would say "Shekh ma shieraki anni," or "my sun and stars."
