England Star Frank Lampard Set To Join David Villa In MLS At New York City FC?
Spanish soccer star David Villa is heading to the MLS, joining the new franchise, New York City, but could England veteran, Frank Lampard, join him? The MLS is growing in stature every year, and with the ability to play in nice cities, with good summer weather, many superstars are heading to America to finish their careers. David Villa had just finished a runner-up in the UEFA Champions League, but he has signed a three-year contract with NYC. Today, Frank Lampard revealed he's leaving Chelsea, and it's believed the MLS could be his destination.
The 35-year-old is currently in England's World Cup squad, albeit not in a starting role. He is Chelsea's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals, but he's now a free agent, and it looked likely that he would leave Chelsea, but today he revealed the two had decided to go their separate ways, no matter how hard it was for Frank. He explained "This club has become part of my life,"
It's believed he has received offers from 16 clubs, but there are a few offers from MLS clubs, with one on the table from the new franchise, New York City. Will he opt to sign that offer, or another one, but it seems England teammate, James Milner, believes he will be good enough wherever he goes. He explained "He is a top player, a top professional and the sort we need for the World Cup. I would have thought there will be plenty of Premier League clubs after him next season. He is certainly not finished."
With his long-time teammate Ashley Cole also a free agent, one wonders if they'll join the same MLS club, in order to help their transition. Before long, the MLS will be a major force in soccer, and not just a retirement destination.
