Tony Awards 2014: Audra McDonald Makes History Last Night By Winning Her 6th Tony Award
The Tony Awards were last night and they were truly record-breaking.
Broadway veteran Audra McDonald ended up breaking two records last night after taking home her 6th Tony Award trophy for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill." She has become the only performer to have won in all four performance categories, and also become the performer with the most Tony Awards to her name.
With the win, McDonald beats out fellow Broadway legends Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris, who each have five wins to their names.
Also note that she has achieved this incredible feat in the span of only 20 years, from 1994 to 2014. Out of the 8 awards that she has been nominated for, she has taken home six of them. It's awesome that she gets to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her first Tony win (1994 for "Carousel") by breaking not one, but two records.
The following are the list of accolades of the Tony's that McDonald has achieved over the years.
2012 Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical "Porgy and Bess."
2014 Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill."
2004 Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play "A Raisin in the Sun."
1998 Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical "Ragtime."
1996 Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play "Master Class."
1994 Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical "Carousel."
Congrats to the living legend that is Audra McDonald.
