Peter Dinklage Talks Tyrion's Pivotal Game of Thrones Season 4 Finale Scene
[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR GAME OF THRONES SEASON 4 FINALE BELOW]
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) was all set to escape King's Landing, and his execution, in the Season 4 finale of Game of Thrones. But before he left, he had to make a couple of pit stops to kill his former love, Shae, and his father, Tywin (Charles Dance) while he was on the toilet.
Dinklage spoke to EW.com and said Tyrion had to confront his father because he "can't leave without some closure."
"He doesn't know what's going to happen," added Dinklage. "He understands the force that Tywin is, so I think he's smart enough to know that there are consequences for going up there. But he can't leave without something. He needs that closure. No matter what it is, he needs something. Maybe he's going to get killed, but he just can't leave yet."
Tyrion has his father at the point of a crossbow bolt, but he doesn't fire until Tywin calls Shea a whore more than once. "Tyrion is grief-stricken about what he just did [to Shae] and Tywin doesn't give a sh*t," Dinklage said. "So that's the finger that fires."
Dance does not read George R.R. Martin's novels, but he told EW he found out about his death scene last season when a fan told him on the street. He then grabbed a book and read all about it.
Furthermore, he calls Tywin a hypocrite because he has Shae in his bed. He also had an interesting take as to why Tywin continued to anger his son, even while he had a crossbow aimed at him.
"As far as Tywin is concerned, [Tyrion] is the one area he's failed in because in 15th, 16th century in Europe, any imperfection - whether it's dwarfism, blindness, a child born unperfected - ideally, you smother them, get rid of them, put them in a bucket or anything," Dance said. "He let Tyrion live, to his astonishment, and Tyrion is the brightest of his three children, the wittiest, and the cleverest. Those are the qualities that he would admire if he weren't a dwarf, but the fact that he's a dwarf is a continual reminder of his failure. So as long as he's alive he's going to treat him like sh*t. It's horrible."
Finally, Dance said all he wants for his deceased character in Season 5 is a great funeral to start the season.
